2015 Poker Grind at the Winstar

A little info about me:

I'm a 32 year old with a full time job, I manage an oilfield company in Texas, however I eat, sleep, and think poker all the time for the last 5 or so years. I was a poker dealer at Winstar from 2005 until 2010. Most poker dealers are horrible poker players I guess I just had enough discipline not to be a super action junkie. I also have a wife and a 7 month old boy and a 14 year old step daughter. I try to play about 15-20 hours a week.

I am going to post some hands from my journey along the way and also try to post my results once a week and maybe a full update with graphs and stuff once a month or something like that. Here is my post about 2014.

I have been a subscriber to Bart for a few years now and I credit my success to his training! I have a full time job and play poker about 15-20 hours per week at Winstar Casino. I am mainly a 1/3 player and have been pretty successful with it. I have played some 2/5 as well and haven't been very successful with that. I play pretty laggy and rely heavily on hand reading and live bet sizing tells. I also do not tilt much, I still play well even when I am stuck. I still have a lot of areas that need improvement and I will be working on it through 2015 as well. Anyways here are some of my stats from 2014.

1-3: I played 515 hours with a total win of $16,954 for an hourly of $32.00/hr

1-2: I played 72 hours with and lost a total of $205.00 for an hourly of -$2.82/hr.

photo2_zpsc8ccaf57.png

2-5: I played 183 hours with a total win of $508.00 for an hourly of $2.77/hr

Cash games overall

I also managed to win a little over $8,000 playing tournaments as well.

Anyways onto 2015

I have played 42 hours so far this month, I took a few days off of work to play last week.

Total profit so far $3,825.00

1-2, I played 5 hours for and lost $173.00/-$32.52/hr.

1-3, I played 25 hours and made $937.00/$36.51/hr

2-5, I played 11 hours and made $3,061.00/$265.78/hr

I mainly play 1-3 during the week and 2-5 on the weekends. I feel that the 1-3 games are just to easy not to play and we have quite a few 2-5 grinders during the week. Probably 2 to 3 winners at each table during the week in the 2-5. The weekends there are many more 2-5 games to choose from. I would like to be playing 2-5 primarily by the end of this year. I will post a few hands here in a little bit. Feel free to ask any questions.

I'm in a 1-3 game and have only been there about 15 minutes and have about $450.

Effective stacks in this hand are $450

    I limp UTG with 8 8
3 people limp and then the SB makes it 8 and she is about a 30 year old lady who is pretty bad. We go to the flop 5 ways and we see a flop of 8 :s: 6 2. The SB (preflop raiser checks) I usually like to lead on this flop however the guy on the button that I have a lot of history with usually bombs any board that is checked to him. He is very aggressive when it is checked to him and has no concept of way ahead way behind. So it checks to him and there is about 36 in the pot after the rake and he bets $50. Folds back to me and I call because if I check the turn and it comes a brick he will usually just spazz out. We go to the turn heads up and see a Q I check and he shoves 380 into $130 so I call and he says Fuck! LOL anyways river comes Q and I scoop. I probably have about 200 hours played with this guy. That was really the only interesting hand that I had tonight. I will post a few more over the week, I just wanted to post that one because that guy played it so poorly. That's why the 1-3 games at Winstar are so wonderful.

Just realized that HH is hard to read I will look over some other HH's and figure out the best way to word them.

Another hand from the weekend 1-3 game
Villain in the hand has $415 and I cover, He is a mid 30's tight fit or fold type of player but a thinking player but I wouldn't call him a winner just puts more thought into hands than the average player pool here.

Villain raises to 12 from UTG
    Hero calls with 5♣ 5 UTG +1
    2 other players call.
    SB folds.
    BB folds.

    Flop ($48) 5 T 2♣
    Villain leads for $20
    Hero raises to $65
    other players fold
    Villain calls $65

    Turn ($178) 6
Villain checks ( $340 left in his stack)
    Hero bets $160
Villain thinks for about 15 seconds and calls

    River ($498) 3
Villain ($220) tanks for about 30 seconds and checks
Hero tanks for about 1 minute and decide to check

I table 55 and win, I am usually a pretty thin value better however I missed this one. After going back through the hand I think he usually leads when he makes a flush on the river. I probably should have just shipped it in?

Any thoughts on my play throughout the hand?

I really would like to know how you went from poker dealer to managing an oil company.

Re the hand. Love it all until river where you should bet. When he calls such a large bet on the turn he is telling you he is really strong. Bet fold is obv not an option since you are not deep enough but ship might scare off a worse hand. Bet 160 again? The one min tank makes this even better since you are saying you dont have a flush.

Well I use to play pool for a living from about 2000-2004. Some guys that I use to play pool with started a poker game so I started playing in that a few times a week. A guy that played in the game was going to be the poker room manager at Thunderbird Casino in Shawnee Oklahoma and asked if I wanted to go to dealer school to deal there. I said sure. After about 2 months dealing there I decided to move to Texas with some friends to deal at Winstar. At Winstar I met a guy that was going to be starting up an oilfield company and he offered me a job with a start up company and I thought it was a good chance to grow with a start up company. When we started the company it was making about 2-5,000/ month as a company with 4 employees in 2011. The company now has 80 employees and is making about 2 million a month. Unfortunately I am not making that much money but they take good care of me here. My ultimate dream would be for the company to sell and them give me a small percentage so I could pay off my home and have big security blanket so I can just play cards for a living without all of the overhead bills to worry about.

    That's my story!

Well since I live about 6 miles from the casino I get to play a lot on weeknights as well. I hope to be able to put in 4-5 hours tonight. I will post a few hands when I get home or in the morning.

Well I played about 3.5 hours last night, had a great session bought in for $300 cashed out with $1,486 I will post some of the interesting hands from last night. I didn't lose many pots last night so most of my interesting hands were winning hands!

First hand is with this same guy that I played this hand with

1-3 game, I have been there about 10 minutes and bought in for $300

    Hero $350
Villain covers ( a lot of history with this guy and he always thinks I am bluffing)

    UTG limps
    Villain limps
Hero has 88 OTB and makes it 15
    Both limpers call

    Flop ($48) T 2 3 rainbow
Check to me I bet $25
    First limper folds
    Villain makes it $105
Hero tanks for 30 seconds or so and decides to shove for $220 more
He folds 77 face up, I was very surprised I thought he was going to call off with like A2 OR A3 definitely didn't think he would fold 77

Villain always thinks I am bluffing and calls off very light, I don't think he is ever playing top pair or two pair plus hand like this. He is either doing this with a 45 type of hand, small pair or an airball bluff

  • LuckSack81LuckSack81 Posts: 20Subscriber
    Hero $450 effective
Villain covers ( same villain that always thinks I am bluffing)

    UTG +2 limps
    Villain limps
Hero OTB raises to $15 with 5 6
    both players call

    FLOP ($48)
    Q 7 8 :s:

Checks to hero OTB and I bet $25
    first limper folds
    villain calls

    TURN ($98)
    4 :s: board is Q 7 8 :s: 4 :s:

    Villain now bets out $80
Hero makes it $200 with about another $210 behind that.
    Villain calls

I am thinking that he has a top pair type of hand and probably turned a spade draw. He likes to play hands like this. I think if he has a two pair plus hand in this spot he will check raise because he thinks I am very spewy and that I try to run everyone out of the hand all the time. I don't think he will ever fold a Q here and if he calls the pot will be about $500 with about $200 left to bet on the river.

    River ($498)
    K :s:
    Final board is
    Q 7 8 :s: 4 :s: K :s:

Villain checks-Villain grabs his remaining chips and tanks like he is trying to figure out how much to bet and then checks at this point I don't think he is ever checking a flush here and I think he will call off with any two pair plus hand.

    Hero shoves for $215
    Villain snap calls

I table my hand and scoop villain gets mad and leaves the table.

I have a few more hands that I will post later in the day

2 bluff catchers, one that is very questionable and one hand where I flopped 2nd nut flush and got a little confused during the hand.

Dude that old grab chips to act like they gonna bet has Gotta Be one of the most reliable tells.

I think I'm going to try to do that as a reverse tell vs someone.

Last night I played 4 hours and lost $700, I feel like I played ok I didn't really make to many mistakes. I do have a few hands to post later today. I was playing in a very active very loose table and was pretty card dead for a lot of the night.

The first hand that I really got into

    1-3 with about 300 effective.

Villain: is in the 1 seat I am in the 2 seat, I have only been at the table for about 2 rounds of the button. The villain has been opening for pretty small raises around 8 to 13 dollars but I haven't got to see any of his hands. I feel like he is playing pretty loose for his small raises.

Villain UTG +2 raises to 13
    Hero has A :s: 6 :s: and calls with 300 effective
    Button calls
    BB calls

    Flop ($50 after rake)
    A 8 5

    BB checks
Villain bets $16 ( I feel like this is a hand like KK or QQ or some kind of hand that he is scared to actually put in strong bet, he has been bet calling quite a few flops that he plays)
Hero raises to $47 ( I wanted to raise here to try to get anyone behind me with a better ace to fold so I can play the hand heads up with the villain)
    Button folds
    BB folds
    Villain calls

    Turn ($146)
    8
    Board
    A 8 5 8

    Villain checks
Hero Bets $85 ( I think I can get called by this guy with a lot of his weak pair type of hands here)
    Villain calls

    River ($316)
    5 :s:
    Final Board
    A 8 5 8 5 :s:

    Villain checks
Hero checks ( I was trying to figure out if I could actually get called by worse here and I thought there was a good chance he would just fold for a $150 shove here and if he did call I would be beat so I decided to check)

Villain shows T 8 :s: and scoops the pot.
