Call or Raise the river?

JoneseyJonesey Posts: 151Subscriber
5-500 spread limit game at Talking Stick casino in Scottsdale (blinds 3-5). Effective stacks are roughly 1450 (max buy-in is $1500, he just re-bought). Villain is tilting after losing two big pots and has opened to $20 the past 8 hands in a row, showing down off-suit trash twice. He opens for $20 in the cutoff and I 3-bet $85 on the button with 3s3c. We see the flop heads up of 4s5c5h. He checks and I bet another $85, he calls. Turn is a Qh, he checks, I bet $125, he snap calls, which is unusual for him, he's usually been check-raising in his tilt either on the flop or turn. I sense a possible trap. River is the miracle 3h, he checks, I bet $$250, he raises the max to $750 leaving him with approx. $400. I call and take the pot when he shows 6-9 hearts. Did I chicken out on the river?

And should I have checked the turn?

I would not choose to 3-bet baby pairs like 33 pre-flop, just flat. As played I would check the turn, and as played I would have re-raised the river.

What's the purpose of 3! preflop? Yes, we are going to have the best hand almost always against a guy playing ATC but he's going to have two overs nearly 100% of the time and doesn't seem like he'll be too interested in folding if he hits. As played, this is a mandatory river raise, we have the nuts here.

I can see some logic to 3 betting to iso the V who can have any two cards. But since the purpose is just to keep the blinds out of the hand, you could consider 3betting just 2-2.5x the raise. This should achieve the goal without bloating the pot.

Also on a side note, suggest looking at how others format hand histories in the forum to promote easy scanning.

Thanks Superfly, first hand post here. I'll get better at notation.

Definitely 3 bet all-in on the river. You are beating 67 and a random 5 both of which is in this guys range. Occasionally you make lose to QQ or 44, 45 suited but you are beating more hands than you lose to. Bart
