What is your take on the marathon? I will be there but I am still debating if I should play it. It is so long and during the week, so the skill of the average player must be much higher. Plus playing three days and not cashing must be tough. On the other hand, the structure is awesome.
I have been debating for a month about playing it or not. There are some good events on other casinos I would have a bigger edge on. And some variants in wsop happening the week of the marathon I am good at.
    Thoughts?

I know Bart is pretty strongly against the Marathon due to how long it is and the fact that you can fire the Milly on the weekend prior in a likely softer field. He wants to maximize hourly 100% and he's constantly deciding whether to take juicy cash games rather than tournaments so I'm not in complete disagreement.

That being said. Personally I very much liked the structure of the Marathon. I made it to Day 4 last year, so I'm certainly biased on liking the event, but I also felt very comfortable as a cash game player getting to be deep stacked for much of the event.

It is ALWAYS brutal busting events where you make it past Day 1 and don't cash. It just is. I busted the main late on Day 2 last year and it sucked. Does that mean it wasn't worth playing? Nope - was definitely worth it.

As for the field. Yes, it was tougher than the 1k's, 1.5k's, and most of the weekend events. But don't forget it is also closer to a 3k than a 1.5k in terms of buyin. Of course any evaluation of the field softness will be anecdotal since I've only played the tournament once, but my experience was basically Day 1 was typical of any 3k or smaller buy in WSOP event. Soft, people suck at deep stack play, and while the field was peppered with well known players, the vast majority of your opponents would not be winning cash game players at 2/5. Day 2 wasn't that different (slow structure sure is nice). Day 3 is where I first started to feel the field changing and getting tougher. But this isn't that different from any other WSOP event.

Day 4 was tough. I think this is where you really see the difference from other events. When you're only playing 6 levels per day, the worst players have a LOT of trouble making it through, so there just weren't many truly soft spots anymore (relative to Day 1 or 2).

Ultimately what you choose to play depends on you and how you value your time. If you will despise everything when you bust late Day 2 and didn't cash, and if you like cash better anyway, then I see not playing it. I also see playing Milly Maker and then only playing Marathon if you don't make Day 2 in the Milly for example. For me I found enough extra play and enjoyment from the structure that I decided to pass on the Milly this year to make sure I can play the Marathon.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I will surely fire on day 1 or the milli maker (a and b if necessary). If I don't make it to day 2, I may play the marathon. Still pondering about it! There are a bunch of 1,1.5 plo tourneys that week too!
